Godschick61016 writes the following about In My Father's House :
In My Father's House, by Ann Rinaldi is a great book that is addicting from the moment you pick it up. It is set in Manassas, Virginia during the 1800's when the Civil War took place. Oscie Mason her sister, Maria, mother, setpfather Will McClean, and her two half siblings are living during a time of war and slavery. Things in America are moving rapidly and bringing change and the North and South are about to fight in the Civil War because of the way they see things. The characters in this book are very well developed and are easy to understand. I would definently say they are complex and have a unique way of adding to the book. I think it is very effective because without these certain characters and their opionions, the book wouldn't be the same. Another element that is used effectively in this historical fiction novel is the setting. It is very well described and the reader is never unclear of where the characters are and what is taking place at the time. It is very effective because it helps the reader visualise more about what this important time in history was like. The plot is very good as well. There are a lot of different things going on in the book at the same time, but eventually they get worked out. It adds to the overall theme of the book and is very effective in helping the reader understand what is going on and relate with the characters. This book was very thought provoking, but the vocabulary was not very hard to understand. It has a lot of great information about the Civil War and events leading up to that specific time in history. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and want to keep reading for more!
