Katie writes the following about Because of Winn-Dixie (Newbery Honor Book, 2001) :
?His tongue was hanging out and he was wagging his tail. He skidded to a stop and smiled right at me.? Opal Buloni, short for India Opal Buloni, is a nice young lady who lives with her father, the preacher, in the southern part of the United States. I like Opal because she has a nice personality, shes caring and loving, she loves animals, but she doesnt have very many friends. When opal was younger, her mother had left her and her father, and hasnt come back to them. Opal hasnt made many friends since she moved, but she did make one paticular friend. Opal is the main character in Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo.
Opal had to go to the store to pick up some box?s of macaroni-and-cheese, some white rice, and two tomatoes. That is when she made her first friend in the Winn-Dixie grocery store. As she was at the store getting the things she needed, a dog came running around the corner, toung out and everything. The owner of the Winn-Dixie grocery store was yelling and getting mad for a dog being in his store. Opal felt bad for the dog and told the owner it was her dog. Opal took him home and asked her dad if she could keep him and clean him up, and thats where the story begins.
Opal is a strong-hearted young lady, who loves animals, and lovers her dad, the preacher. But there?s one thing that Opal really wants to know wabout, and that?s about her mom. Opal was young when her mother had left her and her father. She wated to know just ten things about her, but she knew her dad would be scared to talk about her. Opla asked him, but it took him a while to tell her. Opal wrote them down and memorized them, so if she sees her mom, she will know right away who she is.
The book Because of Winn- Dixie by Kate DiCamillo is a great book to read when you have nothing to do. I hope you will like the book as much as I did.
