Shelby writes the following about The Secret Window :
Close your eyes, and imagine you just moved to a new house. When you look around, you find a dollhouse. When you look in that dollhouse, there is someone looking back at you. What would you do? Would you scream and run or would you investigate? The Secret Window, by Betty Wright, takes one unsuspecting girl on that rollercoaster ride. To me, the setting and plot stand out in this book more than anything else. Meg and her family just moved into a very big, and very old house. Meg, being the exploring type, begins to snoop around the attic. To her surprise, she finds an old dollhouse that is the replica of the very house she is in. Meg looks through the attic window on the dollhouse, and sees real people. As she watches these people go about their daily lives day after day, she notices an evil force acting on the women of the house. Meg is forced to relive some horrifying scenes, and decides to take matters into her own hands. This plot will have you on the edge of your seat just as it had me. The setting of this book impacts the plot incredibly. Most of the book happens in one house. This house is very old, which allows Meg to watch people through the dollhouse who lived in the house many years ago. The book flips you through a few different times in history every time Meg looks in the dollhouse. There are scenes she watches from over 150 years ago! It is exciting to the reader when Meg is watching these things happen that really happened many, many years ago. If you read the book, you should try to recognize how much the plot and setting stand out. There are so many twists and turns in The Secret Window that you will never want to put it down. All I can say is that I read it faster than any other book I have read before. That alone is saying a lot.
