Janessa writes the following about A Child Called 'It' :

Imagine living in a mad house with a mother who starves and beats you. Would you like to live there? In A Child Called ?It,? Dave Pelzer tells the true and dramatic story of his childhood and search for love.
Dave doesn't get to feel of play like a real child should anymore. He does chores and gets beat everyday by his abusive mother. Dave started out being terrified of his mother and thought of himself as a ?bad boy,? which is what he was often told. He changed near the end of the book and stood up to his mother and realized that she was the bad one.
The setting, which is the mad house that Dave lives in, has a big effect on him because that is where he got beat. Dave was even locked in the bathroom with a bucket of ammonia and Clorox, which created a deadly, gas chamber that Dave had to survive.
I think that the book was very good and dramatic. The fact that the book was true makes it very exciting and real.
