Kelley Pinnick writes the following about The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963 (Newbery Honor Book, 1996, No 2) :
The Watsons Go to Birmingham is an interesting, educational book. The book is based on an African American family living in the 60's, facing many racial issues, while taking a trip to Birmingham, Alabama.
I think that the author, Christopher Paul Curtis, really gives the book its own character, and uniqueness by giving the characters such diverse personalities. The way that the author presented the setting of the book, really kept you interested in the book, and made you want to keep reading. This book always had you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what would happen next.
The book was very unpredictable, with the characters and their actions, and gave a great detail about the characters feelings, thoughts, and personalities.
I would recommend The Watsons Go to Birmingham, to any age reader that is looking for an exciting, hilarious book that will always keep them guessing.
