Jenna Stehlik writes the following about Tigers in the Snow :
Tigers in the Snow was a book that told people about tigers in Asia and other near areas, and explained why the tigers were becoming extinct and what was being done to prevent it. Peter Matthiessen wrote of his adventures of tracking marked tigers and recording their living style, hunting, breeding, and other information that would help them in their continuing research on tigers. He also told of the Siberian Tiger Project to study and protect the tigers. They wanted to protect these animals because fewer and fewer tigers were being found in Asia until in some places you couldn?t even locate them, and they were gone. Things such as poachers, deforestation, killing their food supplies, environmental disasters, and many other events led up to these animals becoming extinct. In this book, they told of how tigers were prized as great animals and known as many different names, such as "Grandfather," "Old Man," or even "Devil." It told of how they were seen as sacred animals; and if you were to kill one or harm it, the tiger would come back to hurt you or even give you terrible luck. This book is the kind of book that would be an informational book with adventure and new ideas.
I gave this book a rating of 5, because I don't think that this book really caught my attention enough throughout the book. It was an interesting book that had a lot of information that I previously didn't know. However it seemed to be somewhat boring after a bit when descriptions of tigers were repeated except for occurring in a different region. At other times I had difficulty understanding the regions the author was talking about, because they switched suddenly and did not fully describe the specific region. But overall you can say it may be a book to read if you want to follow an adventure to save tigers.
Also, this book has photographs that showed the people connected with the project to save these animals as well as fascinating pictures of tigers, what tigers symbolized in other areas, and some of the tales about tigers as told in the beginning of the story.
Overall, it was a good book that had some really interesting facts in it as well as great pictures that related to what they were writing about.
