Mama Tyler writes the following about John David Crow, Heart of a Champion :

Heart of a Champion is one of my favorite sports books, because it tells about true things that happen to teenagers. They play baseball, drive very fast, drink beer secretly, and talk about girls. The main character is Seth Barham when he was little kid, his father died from a stroke in a hotel. Now in modern day he?s a teenager going into high school in Redwood City, California, and he?s learned everything about baseball from his friend Jimmy and from Jimmy?s dad. But things don?t go right. Jimmy moves, he?s stuck on a really bad baseball team, and he?s frustrated he can?t hit an 80 mph fastball from Steve Canon. This book reminds me of Honus and Me. Both main characters are frustrated when they play baseball. They get mad when someone yells something bad at them. What is different though, is that they have totally different personalities. The main character in Honus and Me is a very angry kid. Seth is a very quiet kid who doesn?t show his emotions and has very good grades. I would give this book 9.5 out of 10. I would give it a 10, but the book smells really bad. They should put some perfume on it or something. The best part of the book is the illustration. You can visualize every sentence in your head. The theme is practice, and practice, or you will never succeed in anything. Next time you go to the library pick up Heart of a Champion. It?s a great book!!!
