Phil Phinkle writes the following about Freak the Mighty :

Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick is one of my favorite books. It?s a realistic fiction book based on two friends who help each other get by.
Max Kane is a kid who is much bigger than anyone in his grade, and everyone even himself, claims he has no brain. His dad?s in jail for killing his wife (Max?s mom), and now he lives with his ?Grim and Gram,? his grandparents. He spends his days in the ?down-under? (basement).
Kevin/Freak is a kid who is a genius and has a disease that causes him to grow very slowly. He can?t walk, and his spine is curved. He becomes Max?s neighbor, and they both have many quests in FREAK THE MIGHTY.
The events happen recently in the town they live in.
The theme of the book is, don?t judge a book by its cover, or in this case, don?t judge a person by what they look like. Most people thought that Kevin would be un-cool because he is smaller than most people, but Max didn?t care; and Max looks big and dumb so people wouldn?t be nice to him, but Kevin teaches him stuff and Max becomes smarter, they both become good friends.
The Mighty is the movie version of the story put into a book. They are the same because they have the same storyline, but the two books are different because there are pictures from the movie in this book.
I rate it a 10 out of 10, because it is a great book. It hooks you and makes you want to keep reading. There is a lot of suspense and there are a lot of exiting parts.
My suggestion is to make more! There is already a sequel,
Max the Mighty, which I?m just dying to get my hands on.
The only illustration is the cover, and it shows Freak on Max?s shoulders. It?s a good picture, because it shows the size differential between Freak and Max.
