I just read an amazing book called My Secret War, by Mary Pope Osborne. If you like books that are diaries and are about the war, then this would be a great book for you.
The main characters in the story are Madeline, Mom,and Johnny. Madeline is a girl whose dad is fighting in World War II,and she just moved to a new home and a new state."Mom" is the mom of Madeline. Johnny is a friend of Madeline, and they go to school together. The characters in the story are very believable; it's like you are one of the characters in the story. For example, in the story Madeline explains her life in a very detailed way. She tells about the way she lives ,and her friends at school.
"My Secret War" is similar to the other books in the Dear America series. The Dear America series are diaries about history including slavery. I would give this book a 10 because it really made me feel like I was in the book and that I was dealing with the same problems as the characters. For example, it gives alot of detail which allows the reader to have a picture in their mind. I thought that the front cover of the book really helped with understanding the way Madeline looks, the way her family lives, and her lifestyle.
I recommend this book for grades five and up. I really enjoyed this book because of the pictures I get in my head when I read it. I hope that if you decide to read this book, you will enjoy it as much as I did.
