Book review project
Many girls have problems with what they look like. In the book Fat Chance by Leslia Newman it shows that being skinny is not the important feature of a person. I would definitely rate this book an 8, because it shows real issues that go through a teenage girl?s mind as she grows up. The characters in the book make the story even better by making the situations seem like real life. The settings of this book were school and home, so that gives you an idea of what to imagine in your head.
Although setting is important, the plot is the most important piece. In Fat Chance the main character, Judi, believes she is overweight. Then one day she walks in on Nancy Pratt the most skinny, popular, and prettiest girl at school, making herself throw up her food. Judi figures that she will do the same thing and get just as skinny as Nancy in the bathroom. Soon, Judi is faced with many problems, and life takes a turn for the worst.
The issues that are dealt with make the story seem real life. For example, Nancy starts blackmailing Judi about her little secret. Fat Chance is like real life because many girls can relate to it, either because they binge themselves or know someone else who binges. Many people are facing each day with some of the same decisions made by Judi. One decision Judi has to make is whether or not to tell someone about her bad habits.
There are several reasons why someone would read this book. Some people choose the book to read just by looking at the cover. The cover illustration, I think, would interest most people in this book, because the picture makes you think about what the story might be about. Pretty soon you will find yourself caught up in the story.
This book was so unique that I couldn?t find anything to compare it to. The only suggestion that I would have for the story that to make it a few steps better, is to make some of the entries in the journal a little shorter. While I was reading the long entries, I felt like all she was doing was rambling on. Besides my one suggestion, I think this book is excellent reading material that can help girls be proud of themselves.
