Palmer LaRue did not want to be a wringer. But to keep his new friends, new reputation, and new name, he did not have a choice. In this book Wringer by Jerry Spinelli, after his ninth birthday, Palmer, a.k.a. ?Snots? becomes a different person.
Palmer is actually a good kid inside, but his new friends and new reputation fail to show that side of him. His father is the town?s sharp-shooting pigeon champion who expects Palmer to follow in his footsteps. Beans is the leader of the group that Palmer falls into. In my opinion, Beans is a punky kid who just doesn?t know any better. He can?t wait to be a wringer, but Palmer can.
The setting is in a town where pigeons would not like to be found in. Any pigeon found in town would be shot or killed in another way. During family fest, which comes once a year, 5,000 pigeons are released and shot by the townspeople.
Wringer is a bizarre story with a good plot that after a while you just can?t put down. It?s boring at parts, but other parts make up for it. I rate it a 9.5 for the boring parts. If you like realistic, exciting books with a great ending, then I recommend Wringer for you.
