In The Divide, a boy named Felix Sanders (whose life is hanging onto a thread because he has a heart/blood disease) goes on a vacation to a place in Puerto Rico where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are separated by an imaginary line called ?The Divide?. He strays from the path one day, and his disease causes him to black-out. He falls and lands so that exactly 50% of his body is on each side of the Divide.
On the same island, but in another dimension, an elf named Betony is running away from home. She finds a dying unicorn in the forest. It beckons her to come closer. When the unicorn is about to deliver an important message, it passes away. Betony rushes to the unicorn (called ?brittlehorn?, in this dimension) valley to tell the unicorns what she saw.
When Felix wakes up, he stands up and looks up. The place looks different to him. He gets up and walks out of the clearing into the woods. Soon, Felix?s path crosses with Betony, and they tell each other what has happened to them, and Betony tells Felix that humans were supposed to be imaginary and he tells her vice-versa. Felix tells her that he has a lethal sickness and he must find a spell to cure his disease or he will die. Betony wants to help Felix, but she has problems of her own. An evil pixie named Snakeweed runs a company called Global Panceas. He is selling untested potions, which can be manufactured more quickly, cheaply, and efficiently but have unforetold, maybe deadly side-effects.
Together, Betony,Felix,Ironclaw (a griffin) and two unicorn travel to a city named Tirattle, where Snakeweeds headquarters is located, to stop Snakeweed and find Betony?s siblings. Can the power of teamwork be enough to overcome a wealthy villain who can command militia and two devil-hyenas?
