Imagine finding out you have a relative you never knew about and who was different than anyone else you?ve ever met? Would you be mad that your family never told you about the person, or would you be excited to meet someone new? In the story ?A Corner of the Universe,? by Ann M. Martin, that is exactly what happens to 11 year old Hattie Owen. Her Uncle Adam has been away at a special school all of her life but suddenly the school closes and he has to live with Hattie?s grandparents.
Hattie changes from a shy girl with no confidence, to a strong, brave girl by the end of the story. Hattie has always had trouble making friends and spends a lot of time alone, wishing her life were different. She doesn?t always understand Adam, and the way he behaves, but she likes him right away and they become close friends.
Hattie and Adam need each other. Adam needs Hattie because she sees him differently than other people do and she protects him when other people call him names and don?t treat him fairly. Other people judge Adam by the way he looks, without getting to know him. Hattie needs Adam because he shows her not to be afraid to be herself and he lifts the corners of her universe.
Hattie does the right thing when she defends Adam and tells other people that there is more to him than what they see. She takes the time to really get to know Adam and understand him.
If you enjoy stories that teach you a lesson and make you really think about what you?re reading, ?A Corner of the Universe? is the perfect book for you.
