of all the books i've read in middle school, the outsiders by se hinton is the only one i remember when i was assigned to read and write and essay about some of the controversial issues that caused a book to be banned. I think that the people that don't have anything better to do than to ban books should commit to something more meaningful like volunteering or picking up garbage on the side walks. If issues like gangs and violence are addressed at an early age, incidents like the shooting at Columbine High School would less likely to happen because kids are aware of the consequences.
