Munur Tunca writes the following about The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963 (Newbery Honor Book, 1996, No 2) :

Did you ever believe in fairies? The main character Kenny in ?Watsons go to Birmingham - 1963? by Christopher Paul Curtis does. After the Watson?s came back from Birmingham, Alabama to their homes in Flint, Michigan , Kenny starts to believe in fairies. He believes in fairies because of what he saw in Birmingham, Alabama. If you want to learn what happened keep on reading.

When Byron doesn?t behave no more Mr. And Mrs. Watson plan a trip to Birmingham, Alabama to see Mr. Watson?s mother. When they got there Kenny starts to act like a adventurous and a brave person. Just like me. I was always adventurous and brave. This gets him into a lot of trouble. When some racist white guys bomb the church during Sunday school , Kenny goes there to see what happened. When he does he sees dead children. After this the Watsons go back to their homes. Kenny starts to go to ?The World - Famous Watson Pet Hospital? (Which is behind the couch) immediately. He went there because when ever one of their pet was hurt it went there. His brother Byron convinced Kenny and Joetta (Which is Kenny?s sister) that fairies cured them. So Kenny went there in a hope that he?ll see fairies and they?ll come to make him happy by making him forget whatever he saw in Birmingham. At 6th end he tells his brother his problem which is ?How could they do this to those little children??. It hade a good ending. Every body got whatever they wanted.

Even though I didn?t get the theme. It was a nice book. I rally liked it. I would recommend it to everyone I know. If I would rate this book I would give it a ten out of ten.
