Courtney writes the following about Holes [UNABRIDGED] :
In the novel, Holes, a obease boy named, Stanley Yelnats, gets into trouble. He gets in trouble because one day he was walking under neath of an overpass and a pair of shoes "fell from the sky," and hit him in the head. As Stanley was standing up a police officer drove past and saw him with the shoes. He was immeadiantly in trouble. Stanley got the option of going to prison or (juvinile) camp. The only thing is Stanly didn't know the camp was for juveniles, he thought it was a real camp, a fun one. It wasn't though, it wasn't fun at all. Camp Green Lake is where he was sent to. At Camp Green Lake you are out in the blistering sun digging holes to "build character." Each hole has to be 5 ft deep and 5 ft all around. At camp Stanley meets a lot of new guys. He befriends Zero. As far as anyone at the camp knows Zero doesn't have a real name and is very stupid. Hector Zeroni (as later found out in the book, Zero), isn't stupid at all, he is just uneducated. Stanley, though, teaches him to write in trade for Zero digging Stanley holes. Zero was really good at digging the holes and really fast, and since he couldn't write they thought that was a good trade. All the boys at one time thought about running away. But, as Mr. Sir, the guard, told them all when they first came, that they don't need any fences or anyhtign at Camp Green Lake because you can run away if you wanted to. But to beware because there isn't any water for 100 miles of the camp and you probably wouldn't survive anyways. One day Stanley and Zero decide to run away. They survive, but barely do it. In the end you learn that the only reason they are digging holes is because the Waren, the head hancho, is trying to find a burried treasure from Kissing Kate Barlow. Kissing Kate Barlow is a school teacher froma long time ago. She was know as the kissing bandit because everyone she killed she would kiss while she had on her bright red lipstick. She robbed Stanleys great-grandfather and left him stranded int he desert. When she died from the yellow- spotted lizards her last words were, "Start digging," so that exactly what the Waren is intending on doing. Throughout the story Stanley figures out that she is only looking for the treasure and he spreads the word. In the end Stanley finds the hole with the treasue. The only problem is that it is covered in yellow spotted lizards. The Waren and Mr. Sir (who are both in on the scam), spot him because he found it at night-time. The try to get the treasure but the police come and arrest them. Since Zero is homeless they Yelnats family takes him in as their own. Holes a great novel for all to enjoy!
