Lauren Ferrando writes the following about Because of Winn-Dixie (Newbery Honor Book, 2001) :
Because of Winn-Dixie
By Kate DiCamillo
Written by Lauren Ferrando
I chose to read the book Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. It is a wonderful story about a community that comes together because of a girl and her dog. The main characters are India Opal Buloni, a young girl who has just moved from Watts to Naomi, Florida with just her father and Winn-Dixie, a lovable dog that she found at the Winn-Dixie Market one day.
It all began when her father sent Opal to the Winn-Dixie Market for some groceries and Opal saw a stray dog creating chaos in the store. Instead of letting the manager take the dog to the pound, she claimed it as her own and named it the first thing she could think of ? Winn-Dixie. With the affection that Winn-Dixie showed to everyone they met, Opal began to make friends; first with the town librarian, then with the pet store owner, a young child, then even with the town bullies, the Dewey boys. Even her father became closer to her as the dog got his attention away from his busy work as a Preacher.
My favorite character in the book was Gloria Dump. Gloria Dump was the most amazing character I have ever read about and she plays an important role in the story. She is an old woman who lives by herself in an old house with an overgrown yard. The people in the town think she is a witch. Actually, she is a very sweet, wise, and very well-spoken lady!
Gloria Dump helped Opal to understand that most people wanted and needed friends even when their actions didn?t always seem that way. She was almost like a mother to Opal which was great because Opal?s mother had left them when she was a baby. Gloria listened to Opal, was kind to her and always gave her good advice (like be forgiving). I especially liked her ?mistakes? tree which showed that people can correct their mistakes in their life.
Because of Winn-Dixie is a wonderfully written story. The book was so well written I felt like I had visited their town and could picture what the people looked like. I particularly liked the part when the author listed the ten things about Opal?s mother and the ten things about Winn-Dixie.
I loved this book for all it taught me; not to judge people, to find the good in people, to be forgiving and the value of friendships. I would recommend this book to anyone at any age! I have also read her more recent book The Tale of Despereaux and loved that too!
