Heather writes the following about Black Elk Speaks :
Once there was a tribe called the Lakota. They lived in a village by hills and rivers. They had wars, and wars, against the Pawnees. One day two of the tribe's young men went to the river. One of the boys started to see something coming his way. It started to get closer, and closer. Soon it came in at a distance to where they could see what it was. They saw that it was a ship with a beautiful young woman on the end of the ship. The woman looked as if she belonged to their tribe. She was dressed in a deerskin dress. The boat got so close it got stuck on the bank of the river. The young woman raised her hands and then a white cloud came over the ship. The woman started to fly over to the boys. She started to sing and then spin a web and then she stopped singing. She killed the boy and told the other boy to tell his tribe to make a giant teepee for her. So the boy went and told his tribe what happened. The tribe started to make a teepee. Now you can read the book and find out what happens next.
