Craig writes the following about The Cay :
The boy, Philip, and his mother were leaving Curacao during WWII because it wasn't safe and his father was fighting overseas. However, after his boat was torpedoed, he ended up blinded on a raft without his mother. His only companion was a black man named Timothy. He had been taught to look down on blacks. Timothy taught him many things.Philip learned how to fish and other things that were necessary for survival on a deserted island. Once, during a hurricane,Timothy saved Philip's life. Eventually, even though Timothy died, Philip was rescued and reunited with his parents.More importantly, although he went through many bad situations, Philip was better off in the end because he was a better person and learned to respect people regardless of the color of their skin.
