Olivia Spurr writes the following about Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry :
This story is set in Mississippi,in the early 1930's.The main character is Cassie, along with her parents, grandma, and brothers and their friend T.J. It is a story about black families, how they lived, and their culture. It shows problems with white people, schooling and survival on their farm.

I thought this book was very different, but in a good way. I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed all the characters, especially the main character,Cassie. I liked the way Cassie stood up for her rights even though she knew she'd get in trouble for them.

I thought it was a great book with a wonderful story line. I liked all the twists in this story but my favourite was finding out Papa started the fire to distract the angry men away from T.J. I thought that lightning started it.

I liked the way the Logans had faith and never gave up their land even when they did not have a single penny left in their pockets. And I liked how in the end the problem with T.J. was still not solved so we have to guess from the information we already have.

The characters I did not like were the Grangers, I thought they were too greedy and mean to the Logans.
