Samantha Stanley writes the following about The Princess Diaries :
The Princess Diaries, by Meg Cabot, is the tale of an ordinary girl growing up as a normal teenager, with love and life worries. That is until she reaches her birthday and is told she is the heir to the throne in Genovia.
The main character, Mia Thermopolis, is a typical teenager. She worries about the smallest things, finds herself in love for the first time and is self conscious about her appearence. When she finds out she is heir to the throne, she also finds out her grandm?re is part of the package, along with the new name Princess Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo. Attractive! She must take princess lessons from her grandm?re, the dowager princess of Genovia, who thinks Mia has a thing or two to learn before she takes over the throne.
Mia's crush Josh Richter, is a high school 'jock.' He dates glam highschool idol, Lana Weinberger, who looks down on Mia like something on her shoe! Josh is sneaky and cunning, and gets the Mia and himself in a tricky situation as her prayers are answered, well kind of...
Mia's mom, an artist, works long hours and tries her best to be a cool mom for Mia's sake. Mia loses some of her respect for her mom, as she finds she has kept a secret for a good length of time! Also, Mia begins to dislike her mom greatly, when she finds out she is dating her algebra teacher...
Mia's dad, Prince of Genovia, who can no longer have kids. This means no male heir to the throne, which leaves his only daughter...Because he is Prince of a country, this makes him tough, right? WRONG! His most feared woman in the world is his Mother. The strict woman she is, takes over Mia and demanded him and Mia's mom should finish, when she found out Mia's mom was pregnant...with the heir to the throne.
My favourite parts of the book is when Mia writes down little 'note to self' messages at the end of a diary entry. For example, reminding herself to be more assertive or do a World Civ. report on Iceland. They are always different and make me laugh so much!
The main theme in this book is love, crushes and teen drama's. As Mia writes more about her life, it is like her life through a lens for the reader, as we see each detail, each worry and those everyday problems she, along with many other teenagers, she faces.
None of this book could have been changed, so overally a really good book with a hidden technique which gets the reader involved, which really works! The book ends with... well, that wiuld be telling, so go out and read it! Meg Cabot has written many other books such as the sequels to this series, 2, 3, 4 and 5, Nicola and the Viscount, a new series, and All Americam girl. 10/10!
