As a fifth grade teacher, I have found this book an excellent novel to read together as a class. Although it is written in a futuristic setting, it's a great opportunity for students to think about "what if." The book does deal with adolescence (the stirrings), but also includes themes of friendship, survival, and hope. The ending is a bit ambiguous, which frustrates some readers, but I believe it represents closure of coming "full circle."
