michael writes the following about The River :
I read The River by Gary Paulsen. The main character was Brian Robeson, a brave and smart teenager. This story took place mainly in the Canadian wilderness and in a river. The time was modern day and the climate was cold with mosquitoes. The River is a sequel to the book, hatchet. In Hatchet, Brian survives 54 days in the wilderness with only a Hatchet. In this book a psychology teacher named Derek comes to Brian's house asking him to go back and do it all over again. Derek wants to accompany Brian and take notes about the journey. The story is about their adventure together. Derek is struck by lightening. Brian must figure out how to get Derek, who is in a coma, down the river to safety. Brian builds a raft and tries to get Derek to the Trading Post 100 miles down the river. Brian had grown used to the wilderness because of his previous adventure their. He was very brave in this story. Derek, the other main character, wasn't really familiar with the wilderness. He learned about survival from Brian. The lesson I learned by the main character are, how to survive with our own determination and bravery when Brian was stranded out in the wilderness for more than 54 days and now government wants him to do the same thing again. To teach the astronauts and military the survival techniques he used. I enjoyed this book because it was fun to read and very well written. I gave the story 9.9 points because this is the most exciting survival story that I?ve ever seen. It was one of those books that make you want to keep reading it. I love Gary Paulsen books because he makes his stories exciting. I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventure stories. Gary Paulsen's books are exciting to read, and are fun to read if you like reading about the outdoors and survival stories
