The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett is an interesting fantasy story with wonderful descriptions of gardens. Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English born writer who wrote many books including The Lost Prince and Little Lord Fauntleroy. She moved to the United States in 1865. This chapter book is about three kids, a Yorkshire boy, a girl from India, and a boy who thinks he is a cripple. They find a garden and try to make it grow. The purpose of this book was to tell the audience that if you try hard enough, you could accomplish great things.
??I?m not a selfish as you, because I am always ill, and I?m sure there is a lump coming on my back,? he said.? This is a quote from the book. This excerpt from page 158 shows Colin, the crippled boy, feeling sorry for himself. He does this because he is spoiled beyond belief and Mary went to talk to Dickon instead of him. All of us have felt sorry for ourselves, but he does it all the time.
On a scale of one to ten I would have to rate this book a 4.3. This book is fairly interesting, but it spends whole paragraphs describing one thing. Some people would appreciate the in depth descriptions, but I myself don?t. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading the less active, more descriptive novels.
