Hannah writes the following about A Child Called "It" :
Could you ever imagine growing up where a beating or two a day is normal? Where your own mother gags you if she thinks you ate anything? Well, you don't have to imagine it, you can read about it in Dave Pezler's book,"A Child Called 'It.'" Imagine Dave, an average height, very scrawny kid. He lives with his two spoiled brothers, his mother and sometimes his father. Dave has been raised in a house with his abusive alcoholic mother. His mother is very scary because she only treats Dave as a peace of trash that can be kicked around, and his two brothers are just spoiled rotten. While Dave slept in the garage on an old army cot and his one sheet, his brothers got to sleep in their bedrooms where there is heat and beds. He and his brothers go to a school where Dave is picked on. Dave often walkes down to the kindergarten rooms and steals lunches. When he goes home, his mom finds out he ate something and then she gags him. Once she locked him into a room with nothing but ammonia to breath in. Towards the end of the book a social worker visits their house and worse leads to worse. The next day at school an officer comes in to talk to Dave and he begins to beg the officer not to tell his mom about this. What he doesn't know is that the officer is there to help him. To find out more, read "A Child Called 'It.'" Read about the abused child Dave as he goes through life with this awful burden.
