Shadoe writes the following about When The Soldiers Were Gone :
Ever think your parents may not be your parents? Henk never did, but he was taken away by a couple that claims to be his parents. In the book, "When The Soldiers Were Gone" by Vera Propp, Benjermin (Henk) changes a lot throughout the story. Ben starts on a Dutch farm thinking he?s a normal Christian boy. Later in the book he finds out that he?s not a Christian boy, but a Jewish child in hiding. After he moves in with his new family, he is made to go to school. On the first day, a Jew hater threw a stone at his head and called him a ?dirty Jew? The entire book took place in Apelhem, and just outside of Apelhem. The book took place in World War Two. That explains why Ben didn?t remember the couple that took him away. Now maybe you can see that the book?s ending is a great one from the things I?ve told you. I highly recommend this book to anyone that would like to hear about WW2 from a hiding child?s perspective. The book is great because the author puts things that we would encounter like moving to a new town, school, and learning to love two families.
