Nette writes the following about Where the Red Fern Grows :
What do you think of when you hear puppy love? Young children? The puppy love I?m talking about is a love like no other! This is real puppy love! In the novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls, two dogs change the life of a boy like never before.
When Billy has a seriously bad case of loneliness, he is desperate to save money and purchase two hound puppies. The only things stopping him are that the pups are 25 dollars and his family does not have any money to spare.
The love of Billy and his dogs, Little Ann and Old Dan, was too powerful to be stopped. They saved each other?s lives countless times, and the fact that Billy was so patient in training then and over so long he kept motivated was amazing! The teamwork between the dogs and Billy was really cool and strong.
Wilson Rawls does a beautiful job of describing a hunting team through words, it?s like watching a movie! He announces the changes in character gradually and through adventures and events that happen in the book.
By the middle of the book, it?s hard not to love the dogs and Billy. He is very generous and emotional which makes him so interesting. The ending, I thought, was perfect for the book and went back to the legends. It couldn?t of been better!
Overall I loved the book because it was emotional and well thought-out! The bond between man and dog really did make me think dog was man?s best friend!
