Night Hoops
Darkness swallows the ball, and the only way you know if you've made it is by the swish of the net. In Carl Deuker's book, "Night Hoops", two boys establish a friendship despite their problems.
Nick Albott is an average kid, and loves to play basketball. His brother loves music, but his dad at the same time wants him to be a basketball star and overlook Nick. Nick's dad builds a basketball court so Nick's brother can practice, but Nick uses it more than Scott by practicing at night.
With his goal set on making the varsity team Nick starts to practice whenever he got the chance. Nick gets even better by playing against his neighbor, Trent, who also wants to make the varsity team.
"Trent wouldn't admit it, but he admires Nick... maybe if he could make the varsity, it might turn him around" as Carl writes in the book.
Nick and Trent play tough and in the beginning the get into a lot of fights on rules and calls. Trent starts to get into trouble with the cops and his family, but by playing with Nick they grow a strong friendship and both help each other through their problems.
Trent starts to gradually give up his bad behavior and habits and starts to act responsible. By helping each other, Nick and Trent earn respect from everyone in the neighborhood and their families.
In the end, Trent and Nick teach us that besides differences and their problems, you can have a friendship with someone.
