Whitney writes the following about A Gift of Magic :
The Gift
Nancy can do things no one else can. Nancy, the main character in A Gift of Magic by Lois Duncan, is disturbed by the thought that her mother, Elizabeth, and father are getting a divorce. She also is getting worried because Tom, Elizabeth?s first love before her father, is spending more and more time with Elizabeth. What?s worse is Nancy has discovered her gift of magic, given to her by her grandmother, and Tom knows about it too.
Nancy wants to hold onto hope that her mother and father still love each other, and that if they were just together again, they would see that too. But, unfortunately for Nancy, Tom is getting in the way. Nancy?s mother is becoming happier and happier, and Nancy knows it. Her sister, Kirby, likes the thought that her mother has a job for first time, and that she?s living in a house instead of hotels, following her father around the world, but Nancy hates it. She cannot understand why Kirby and her brother Brendon are so fine with their mother and father leaving each other.
When they moved to her mother?s hometown, Nancy hated it! She hated going to school, she hated living in a house, and though, she refused to admit it, hated to see her mother so happy without her father. She hated being moved up one year older in school, and she could not get along with anyone but her sister, but Nancy couldn?t get though to Kirby because all that was on her mind was dancing and ballet. Nancy and her family had always known she could do ?weird? things, like know when the phone was going to ring before it did, and know who was on the other line, and she always beat her little brother at ?Go Fish? because she knew what his cards were, though the weirdest thing she could do, was focus on someone, usually someone in her family, who was somewhere else and be there with them in mind only.
After telling Tom to stay out of their mother?s life, Nancy got a letter from her father saying that he got married. Nancy was so upset but all of a sudden she heard someone calling for help. She looked around the room, but no one was there. She heard it again and figured out that it was her brother, Brendon. She then tried to focus him in her mind, but all she could see was water and she only heard screaming. Brendon was in trouble; he was drowning. Her mother and sister were gone and over much deliberation, she knew she had to call Tom.
To find out what happened at the end of this book, you will have to do what I did; read it. There is a lot of adventure and magic in this book that I know you will love. So check out A Gift of Magic and be as amazed as I was!
