SueAnne writes the following about Out of the Dust (Newbery Medal Book) :
In this book, Billie Jo and her parents live in Oklahoma during the Great Depression and a time known as the Dust Bowl. Billie Jo's mom dies and she and her dad live together, but they have a hard time because her dad won't talk much. Billie Jo hates living with all the dust swirling around all the time and she decides to leave the dust. She hops on a train and leaves but after getting to California decides that she wants to be with her family, her father, even if it is in the dust. Billie Jo goes back home and things with her father get better, even though it is still dusty.

This book was awesome. I loved learning more about the Great Depression and the dust bowl. I had not known much about it. I would highly recommend this book. Do not let the poetry form scare you.
