Heidi writes the following about Mandie and the Secret Tunnel (Leppard, Lois Gladys. Mandie Book, 1.) :
Mandie's father has died and she is left with her mean step mother who she believes is her real mother. Mandie is sent to work for other people who are also very rude. But then Uncle Ned, an old Cherokee Indian friend of Mandie's father comes to retrive Mandie from these people. He takes her to a huge mansion where her uncle lives. Mandie had never known about her uncle.
Mandie is adventurous so she and her new friend, Polly, soon discover an old secret tunnel in the house. This tunnel holds a few secrets and so begins to unravel Mandie's past. Her uncle reunites her with her real mother, Elizabeth. Mandie's life then becomes a happier enviroment as she grows to love her mother and learn about her relations. Mandie's strong belief in God carries her through her hard and changing life. But as she makes friends and settles down, she feels that she really does have a good life.
