'Red Sky In The Morning' by Elizebeth Laird
This book is about a girl called Anna Peacock telling a story about the night her brother was born. Anna has a sister called Katy that is 8. This is a interesting book because her brother was not any old brother but he was handicapped. He had a severe mental and phisical retardation called 'Hydrocephalus'. The family decides to call the baby boy Ben. Anna is worried about what people might say about her brother. The book show the reader about the difficulties she faces in her teenage years. It is a sad book but gets less sad towards the end.
The main charactor in this book is Anna who is telling the story but Ben also has a very main part because even though he can't actually phisicly help Anna he makes her realise things that she didn't know before and he helps her mature throughout her childhood. Anna is a normal teenage girl with acne, greasy hair, brace, frecles and glasses. Throughout the book she learns how to cope with life and face difficulties. She likes to be mother aroung the house and organise things, like Katie's party for instance. Later on in the book she feels like she wants a Saturday job, just like every body else in her class. In the end she gets a job at Mrs Chapmans shop. Her hobby is tennis and she likes a boy called Tony that goes there. At school Anna has some friends but they don't usually act like a friend like Debbie and Miranda.
Ben is another main charactor even though he can talk or communicate he has helped Anna considerably. He has helped her realise all the difficulties that people face in life.
The other two main charactors are Mrs Chapman and Miranda. Mrs Chapman is a very kind lady and she is one of the only people that doesn't make fun of Ben. She also employs Anna with a job in her shop.
Miranda is a friend of Anna's from school. When Miranda realises about Anna's brother she doesn't make fun of Anna but actually comforts her. Anna gets to like her better throughout the book.
In my opinion the best part of the book is near the end when Anna babysits Jackie and teaches her to do all sorts of things. I liked all of the book though.
The key theme of this book is coping with difficulties in the family.
I think the very end should be improved because nothing much happens.
