James writes the following about The Magician's Nephew :
THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW is about two children named Polly and Diggory who are transported to the Wood between the Worlds by magic rings. They meet up with Jadis, Queen of Charn, who comes back to London with them and wreaks havoc everywhere! In an effort to use the rings to take her back where they come from, they end up going with her, as well as taking a cabby and his horse and their selfish Uncle Andrew. But Jadis has wicked plans, and when she sees Aslan the Lion creating the world of Narnia, she flees in terror. Aslan makes Narnia a happy and contented place, where talking animals and immortals such as fauns, dryads and others live. Aslan send Polly and Diggory away to find the apple that will keep Jadis from Narnia, but can they find it?

I really liked THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW. It was actually written after his other Narnia books, because Lewis wanted to explore the ideas of how his imaginary land was created.
