In Countdown there are two boys across the world who have conflicts with each other. One is from Kenya, Africa and on is from Big Timber, Montana.
Elliot becomes the first Junior astronaut to go into space. Elliot went through training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Before he gets into orbit he has to have a lot of health exams. When he is in orbit he talks to other people around the world on a ham radio. One of those persons is Vincent Ol Tome, the Masaai boy. When they start talking to each other on the ham radio they have conflicts. They argue about weird little things like who's god is the real god and unusual stuff like that.
Up in space the space shuttle can't land in America, so they have to land in Africa. That's where Elliot and Vincent meet and become friends. When they become friends Elliot hugs Vincent, but Vincent pushes Elliot away and says "Why are you grabbing me?" Elliot said, "Because that's how Americans show how they are friends." So Vincent hugs Elliot back. Vincent reaches out and holds Elliot's hand but Elliot pulls away and says "Don't hold my hand. We're on nationwiide television!" But Elliot holds his hand anyway.
This book tells how people from different countries that have different ideas can still get along. This is a good book. I suggest you read it.
