McKenna writes the following about Countdown :
Have you ever disliked someone so much, you were almost scared of him or her? Have you ever become friends with that person? This book does a great job of showing friendship, courage, wisdom, reality, differences of cultures- and a touch of outer space.
I know what you're thinking, what book could include all that? None other than Countdown, by Ben Mikaelsen.
Countdown is about two boys from totally different cultures. Elliot Shroeder is an average American boy who gets chosen to be the First Junior Astronaut! Vincent Ol Tome is a Masaai boy who is curious about the "Ways of the White-man" and dreams about being a warrior.
When they meet over a ham-radio, they appear to be as different as can be, and assume they'll never get along. But when an emergency brings them together, Vincent and Elliot finally meet face-to-face, and learn it doesn't matter what their differences are, they can still be friends.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a unique book with a touch of outer space, because it's the perfect match.
