Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder is a historical fiction book. The major themes in this book are family unity and survival through the hardships of life during the late 1800s in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura and baby Carrie live in a log house surrounded by nothing but trees. Their lives are very different than ours are today. The family has to eat food that they kill or grow. They have to be careful wherever they go because there are wild animals in the woods. When the family needs things they usually make them. For example, they gather up hay to make straw hats. Laura and her family look forward to things they do for entertainment such as going to town or to a dance. Unlike us today, they have very little but seem to be happy. I enjoyed reading this book because I could picture what it felt like to live that long ago. I loved that the author wrote the book from Laura's perspective. It felt like Laura was telling me her life story. Personally, I would rate this book higher if it had some kind of mystery in it.
