Sarah writes the following about That Was Then, This is Now :
My Opinion on That Was Then This is now, by S.E Hinton I that it was a really good book! But the ending was boring and kind of disappointing compared with the rest of it. In This book Mark and Bryon Are just like brothers and it shows how they grow up and grow apart. In the Beginning Mark and Byron Are two guys you really just didn’t want to mess with, because they would hustle pool and get in fights. But all that started to change when Byron and Mark went to the hospital to visit Byron’s mom, Byron went to the cafeteria and Meet a Girl named Cathy. After dating Cathy and realizing how bad his other girlfriends were and how he said I love you but didn’t mean it, well that changed. Byron Finally thinks he has found the girl of his dreams the one who he can say I love you to, and mean it. But Mark he is still the same old Mark getting into and out of trouble with a breeze. Since Byron has been spending so much time with Cathy, he and Mark weren’t as close as they used to be. Cathy has a little brother named M&M, well that is what they call him because he loves the candy M&Ms, Anyway M&M’s and Cathy’s Father is always doubting M&M because he didn’t like his hair, or how he was failing some of his class’s especially gym. So Because of the Father M&M ran off alone and no one knew where he went, everyone especially Cathy was worried sick about him. Byron got a job at a grocery store as a bag boy to help pay the bills around the house and some of his mother’s hospital bills; No one would hire Mark because of his record. About a Few weeks later Byron was just sick because he was worried about Cathy and her Family, so he talked to Mark about it, Mark told Byron that he knew where M&M was, so they went to where he was, the hippie house as they got there they found out that he wasn’t there. So a few days later Byron went there with Cathy and M&M was there People around the hippie house said that M&M had a bad trip off of LSD, so they took him to the hospital, and they said he might have lost his mind forever. But the father told Byron to take Cathy home so she couldn’t hear anything more, and to wait for him to tell her what has happened, So Byron did, after that he went home. At home Byron needed a cigarette bad so he went to look for some that used to be in a so called secret stash for some, but he didn’t find any, all he found was a canteen full of pills, he thought to himself mark was selling it. Byron was so confused and so mad about Cathy and the canteen full of pills that he called the cops on Mark. As Mark got home he was shocked at what Byron did and just stood in front of him with a blank fearful face. Mark went to jail and Byron went to go visit him once, and Mark and he finally realized at that point how much they hated each other.
