My book report book was The Secret Journey. In the secret journey, Emma, the main character, is at home and finds out that her mother is very ill. Emma’s father says that he and her mother had to go on a ship called the Wayfarer. The Wayfarer is going to France. Her father also tells her that she isn’t able to go and has to stay with her Aunt Martha and her cousin Odolf. Emma then remembers what Odolf does to her when she goes there. Odolf makes fun of her and she doesn’t want to go. She realizes that if she went, she could do the same to Odolf to make him feel the way that he makes her feel. She tries to think of ways to convince her father that she should go because she hates her Aunt Martha’s house. Emma has four plans; plan number one: She could pretend to be sick. Perhaps if she had stopped eating and stayed in bad as her mother did, maybe she could get to go to France with them. Plan two: She would become a housemaid. Emma tried to imagine herself being a housemaid then quickly abandoned that idea. Plan three: She would go to the Christian Orphans’ home; she would pretend to have no parents and declare herself ready to lead a life of service and sacrifice. Plan four: She would smuggle her way into the Wayfarer ship. Emma goes to Aunt Martha’s house and sneaks out in the middle of the night leaving a note. On the note it said where she was and what she was doing. She told a lie in her letter on where she was so that she wouldn’t get into trouble. On the way out the door, she steals one of Odolf’s shirts so that she can disguise herself as a boy so that her parent wouldn’t notice her. She stops by some men and asked for directions for the Wayfarer ship. She tells these men that she is going to say good bye to her parents, but she isn’t. She is going to smuggle her way in. The men were smart and thought that she might be smuggling her way in. The men pointed her to the worst ship ever, the Black Lightning. The Black Lightning is the most evil ship. She realizes this about the third day that she is on the wrong ship. Emma then tries to convince the ship’s captain to turn around to go back to Liverpool, the place where she lives. Emma ends up being the ship’s “boy” of the Black Lightning. For this book, I would give it a 9.5 because it was wonderful. There where no illustrations, but the front cover had a wonderful illustration. I would recommend this book for grades 3 and up. If someone asked me what I would want to change about this book, I would have to say nothing. I had a picture of what was going on the whole entire book. This book would be for any gender.
