In this fourth book of Brian Jacques Redwall series, the reader is taken on a breathtaking adventure of land and sea. It all begins when Gabool The Wild, pirate and king of the searats, captures The Periwinkle, a ship carrying Mariel, her father, Joseph, and the magnificent gold bell. When Joseph refuses to build a bell tower for Gabool he is thrown into the dungeon. Mariel fails in her attempt to kill Gabool. Instead, Gabool throws her off a rock faced cliff into the stormy sea.
Drenched, exhausted and without her memory, Mariel washes ashore. With the help of new found friends she arrives at Redwall Abby where she later regains her memory. Convinced Gabool has killed her father, Mariel swears revenge and thus sets out on a perilous journey to hunt Gabool down. Fortunately, she has the help of Dandin, the young mouse warrior, Tarquin, the ravenous hare, and Durry, the adventure seeking hedgehog.
Mariel and her friends must travel a great distance through swaps, strange forest, sand dunes, and the sea in their search for Gabool. Along the way they encounter both friends and foes. The book also intertwines other story lines, romances, battles and mysteries related to the Redwall series.
Will Mariel and her friends triumph over Gabool? Is her father dead or alive? What becomes of the golden bell? Join Mariel and her friends in their suspense filled journey to find out the answers to these mysteries and more.
I greatly enjoyed reading Mariel of Redwall. As with all the Redwall books, the characters are various fascinating animals with human like qualities facing ongoing battles of good versus evil. Unlike other Redwall books I have read, this book showed more emotion. I highly recommend Mariel of Redwall and rate it a 9 out of 10, because it is both a heart-warming and thrilling adventure.
