What if the world around you was falling apart? Would you notice? What if you lived in a society who killed the useless? The only reason they kept you alive was because you're a talented embroiderer. Kira lives in a mysterious, futuristic town like this. They hold secrets she must find out for herself, if she wants to know the real truth. In Lois Lowry's book, Gathering Blue, Kira notices something she was never supposed to know. The Council of Guardians pronounced her father killed by beasts in a strange hunting accident before Kira was born. After, many townspeople told her mother to leave her child in The Field because of Kira's twisted leg. The Field was a place where the beasts would eat the children that were birth defected or the people that were sent there by the Council of Guardians. Kira has to face them to determine her future since her mother died from a strange illness, leaving her a crippled orphan. Once Kira finds out she is able to stay, she moves into a pre-set up room and meets a new friend next door. Oddly, he was spared from the Field for the same reason she was?He has talent. They both have tasks for the annual festival coming up. Is talent everything? Do the people in the village show love for one another, or is it all a big set-up? Kira knows the truth now, but will she tell her friends and risk their lives also? This was a book I could not put down. You have to read it to see what happens next.
In the end Kira finds her father after she was told since she was little that he was killed by a beast.
