Bella writes the following about Holes :
Stanley Yelnats is supposedly under a curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather. Stanley had the choice in court to go to jail or Camp Green Lake, so he chose camp. So now Stanley has been sent to a boy’s detention center, Camp Green Lake.

At Camp Green Lake there is no lake and no green. It’s a desert area with a whole lot of holes. Every boy there has to dig a five foot deep, five foot wide hole every day because it is suppose to improve there character. But after awhile Stanley starts to realize there’s more than just character building going on there after all. The boys are digging holes because the Warden is looking for something. Stanley had been wondering what could be buried under a big dried up lake
