Alone. In the Canadian woods. Not a sound, sign, or signal. Alone. In the book Hatchet, written by Gary Paulsen, that’s what Brian, the main character is—ALL ALONE. Hatchet is a story about a 13 year old boy named Brian who travels in a small bush plane to visit his father in New York. Suddenly, the pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness. Brian is left alone with only one thing– the hatchet his mother gave him as a going away gift. While Brian is in the wilderness he has many ups and downs and exciting adventures, but you’ll have to read about that on your own.
Hatchet is a spectacular book. It takes you on a wonderful, exciting adventure. Gary Paulsen’s details make you feel like you are actually there. For example, in one part of the story Brian is trampled by a huge moose. Gary Paulsen describes the moose tossing Brian around like a rag doll picture– perfectly. I could just see it happening! In another part of the story, he describes Brian being attacked by a porcupine. By the time I finished that part, I could feel the agonizing pain. These are just two of many extraordinary adventures Brain encounters. You must read this book in order to experience the rest!
