Inside Delta Force, by Eric L. Haney, is just that: an inside look at what Delta Force is and how it came about. Delta Force is short for First Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1stSFOD). Although its name says its "special forces," its actually a counter terrorism unit and operates separate of ARMY Special Force's units like the Green Berets. Because it is the ARMY's premier counter terrorism unit, Eric Haney would not have been allowed to give much information about it. He states that this book is simply the tip of the ice burg, and really, no one knows too much about Delta Force, because it simply doesn't exist on paper.
Eric L. Haney's experience with Delta Force began while he was a platoon sergeant for the 75th Infantry (Rangers). He was chosen to take part in their selection program. After accepting, he was sent to selection where he passed all phases including numerous PT tests, orienteering (land navigation), and to top it off, a 40 mile land navigation. After selection, Haney was sent to training, where he learned about the tools of the trade, the teamwork involved, classroom instruction, and even espionage.
Overall, this book is just what I expected it to be, a first person telling of what Delta is, how they came about, and what it takes (or took, this was about 30 to 40 years ago). Because its such a secretive organization, don't expect to get a lot of in depth training aspects and combat concepts, because all of that is top secret. But if you are looking for a simple explanation of how it all started and a little bit of the training, this book is perfect.
