Tonya Cromwell writes the following about Frist They Killed My Father :
"First They Killed My Father" is a wonderful book. This story is about a Cambodian family who survives an attack on thier hometown. The family is then forced to live the life of the Khmer Rouge invaders or suffer the consequences. Also the family has to try and keep their past lives a secret, because if the Khmer Rouge founds out that the father in the family use to work by the old government's side his whole family could be killed. As the book goes on the father soon is killed and the family has to split up to protect themselves from also being attacked. The main character Loung has to try and be strong not knowing the fate of her other family members. Soon there is an attack against the Khmer Rouger which forces people to run away from their camps and find safe ground. While runing away Loung find most of her family member and is happy to know that some of them are still living. She comes to find out that her mother and two of her sisters didn't make it. Later the family finds their Aunt and Uncle and is able to stay with them for some time. Loung her older bother, and his wife decides that they need to move the family to America for a better life, starting with the three of them. Will they make it to America and be able to bring their other family members over too, read the book to find out. I think that this book is good for everyone to read, because it is a ture story about a familly fighting for each other till the end. For me it was hard to belive that people were treated this way and had no hope, but to flee the country or run away. I think that the main character is a storng person for losing so much of her family members in such a short amount of time. This book is a good adventure to how a family has to survive to one day find each other again. This book reminds me of African-American slave books. I say this, because like slave the Cambodians were forced out of their homeland to work in very hard conditions. The Khmer Rouge soldiers are making them work and are killing them for nothing, just like the slave owenrs. Saddly the Cambodians watch as the Khmer Rouge soldiers kill their family members and take their things, just like the slave owner did with the slaves.
