Lucinda’s Secret:
The house brownie (who recently turned back into a boggart) is out to get Jared. So the kids decide to talk to the one other person who might know what to do – Aunt Lucinda (who is presiding in an asylum because everyone thinks she’s insane). Turns out she’s not insane, just a little shaken by all of the creepy creatures that are hanging around her father’s estate. Her father, is none other than Arthur Spiderwick. Lucinda explains that her father disappeared several years back and her ‘insanity’ is caused from a fairy who gave her a fruitish thing that made ‘human food’ taste like saw dust. Once back home, the three kids go on an expedition, following a map Arthur had made before he disappeared. The map leads them to Faery – the domain of the elves. They manage to trick the elves and escape.
The book got just a little crazy. The superstition of turning one’s shirt inside out to avoid being tricked by fairies was a little weird. When Jared’s mother asks him why his shirt is turned inside out I was tempted to exclaim, “Tell her the real reason, Jared!” Thankfully none of the characters have pulled out a Ouija board or gone to see a fortune-teller in this book. However I was slightly disappointed by the crudeness in the beginning of the book. And when Jared tricks the elves and escapes, I could almost hear Gollum saying “He’s being tricky!” Once again I must come to my original conclusion – this book, like the two before it, is harmless junk food.
