“They called him a freak!” This quote really gets you to realize how much Adam is made fun of in the neighborhood. A Corner of the Universe, written by Ann M. Martin, is heart-warming and you realize how people are made fun of for the strangest things. The main character, Hattie Owen, finds out that she has another uncle named Adam. Adam has been at a mental ‘school’ since he was twelve years old. Hattie’s parents don’t tell her about him until Adam’s ‘school’ shuts down and he has to be sent home.
Whenever Adam arrives home, life for the Owens family turns completely up side down. He is staying with his parents, Hattie’s Nana and Papa. Whenever he meets the boarders at Hattie’s house, he develops a crush on the boarder name Angel Valentine. Adam has developed a love for Angel, He wants to see her almost everyday, but she is usually at the bank where she works. Later on in the book, Adam decodes to plan a birthday party for Hattie at the carnival. She enjoys it, but Adam freaks out on the Ferris wheel. He is sent to the hospital. Later on, Adam comes home from the hospital and visits Hattie. He brings flowers and, as always, he wants to see Angel. Hattie tells him she is either at work or asleep, but her marches to her room anyways. He catches her doing something that she shouldn’t be doing in the boarding room.
This book is very good. I encourage everyone who likes a family story. This story also can build up suspense. I encourage everyone to read this book if you enjoy anything with a somewhat dreary ending.
