hjy writes the following about Searching For David's Heart :
I have never had a brother or a sister but this book surely makes me yearn for one. Searching for David¡¯s Heart, by Cherie Bennett is a wonderful book about a relationship between two siblings that goes wrong. It seems as though nothing can break this bond between this brother and sister but as people say, no relationship lasts forever.
Darcy Deeton, the main character, has a great relationship with her brother, David. Darcy is in 6th grade and thinks of David as her role model and admires him. He spends a lot of time with her and her best friend Sam. Whenever, her father scolded her, it was David who would always make her feel better. David did all that he could for everybody and he also was his school star. Darcy loves him with all her heart, until David finds ¡°the girl.¡± Her name is Jayne Evans and she has all the qualities a guy could ask for in a girl. David starts to spend more time with Jayne that Darcy therefore making her jealous. She wants to break them apart and thinks about ways to do that.
It was Darcy¡¯s birthday and the family was going to have a party. All the presents were stacked up in a pile and everyone was ready, except for David. David wasn¡¯t there and Darcy hoped that he wasn¡¯t with ¡°the girl.¡± Darcy didn¡¯t want to start the party without David. Just then, an old car came in the driveway, it was David. She was so happy that David had not forgotten her birthday. They start the party and everything was going the way they had planned. However, while they were eating, Andy, Darcy¡¯s younger brother, starts to tease her. Darcy becomes furious and in the attempt to hit him, she hits a cup which spills on her father. Her birthday was partially ruined. Later, someone knocks on the door. It was Jayne and now Darcy knew that this was going to be the worst birthday party of her life.
David and Jayne talk about a jazz concert at the nearby park and ask Darcy if she wanted to come. She says she has a headache and goes to sleep in her room. She wakes up in the middle of the night and remembers that there is a jazz concert at the park. She sneaks out to the park. At the park Darcy sees David and Jayne kissing again and yells, ¡°I wish you were dead!¡± to David. She turns around and runs into the street. As David chases her, Darcy hears a screech to a stop and a terrible thud. David was announced dead and his organs were donated to other people.
Darcy knows that David¡¯s death is all her fault and cannot stop thinking about it. She then decides to find the person who now contains his heart. Sam being a very intelligent person finds out who has David¡¯s heart. Now, Darcy is determined to find this person. Darcy and Sam embark on a heart-touching journey with two names, David and Winston.
Cherie Bennett did a great job writing this book. I think her purpose was to entertain but at the same time tell people about how they should love each other. One can never know when another will die. In the end, Darcy regretted hating Jayne because she did nothing wrong. Darcy knew it was her fault and David wouldn¡¯t have died if she had accepted his girlfriend. Never do something you will regret. As I read the book, I felt as if I was Darcy. I felt the pain of Darcy too because I was really caught up in the book. This book was unbelievably touching.
Searching for David¡¯s Heart is one of the few books that have ever touched my heart. I don¡¯t have a brother or sister but I do have a few cousins. After reading this book, I was motivated to be very nice to them. I want them to love me as Darcy loved her brother. I will always cherish the feeling this book gave to me, the feeling of family love. I don¡¯t ever want to lose someone very close to me. I suggest this book to anyone who is willing to be in the place of Darcy while reading the book. It does not matter which grade or how old because nothing is inappropriate and it is suitable for everyone.
