Dan writes the following about Friedrich :
Friedrich is a short novel about a how a German boy in the 1930's balances his loyalties with a Jewish best friend and Nazi pressures from his world. The book is unlike other books that take place in Germany during this time because you really don't walk in the shoes of a minority, like the Jewish people, or go to a concentration camp. I enjoyed that you walked in the shoes of a German boy from the time he was born, before Hitler came to power, to right in the middle of World War II. You want to scream at him to make different choices, like the Jungvolk(you'll learn what that is). Friedrich is his best friend, from five years old, and I really got to like him and his family. There are also villians to dislike in the novel, they live in the same apartment building as the German boy and Friedrich. I learned a lot about the laws that were passed against the Jewish people during this time. I would have made a few changes to the book - I wanted a certain important detail about the German boy to be given and I wanted a follow up chapter like ten years later.
