Hoot
My Book I read for the IR project was Hoot by: Carl Hiddesen. My book starts out with Roy. Roy just moved to Florida, and that means only one thing he is “the new kid” To make matters worst he is on the same bus with the meanest, nastiest, bully in the whole school, and his name was Dana Matherson. To start the story off Roy was sitting on the bus staring out the glassy window. All of sudden Dana comes and smash his head to the window. Roy can barely see anything but the window. Then something caught his eye, it was a kid about his age running. He was running as fast as lightning. The kid had straw blonde hair and it was wiry, his skin was a sort of nut brown, from the sun, the expression on his face was content. He was wearing an old Miami heat Basket ball shirt (faded), and old, dirty, khaki shorts, no shoes. Dana Matherson asked “Had enough cowgirl?”
while adding more force to Roy’s face. He could barley move.
Roy hated his nickname “Cowgirl” The only reason he had that nickname is because on the first day of school his homeroom teacher asked where he use to live, and Roy stood up and said proudly, “Hi, I am Roy, and I am from Montana!” So from that day on he was known as cowgirl. Roy kept thinking about the shoeless boy all day, everyday. Mean while there has been a “crime” at Paula’s All-American Pancake house. The watch-man named Curly who showed Officer Delinko what happened. “They took them survey sticks out of the ground.” “That really isn’t a crime.” Officer Delinko said. “IT IS VANDALISM!” Shouted Curly Officer Delinko wrote it down in his report and walked away. Curly tripped and said “Stupid Owls.” “Owls?” Officer Delinko asked “What owls?” Curly said with an evil grin on his face. Back to Roy and his trouble. Roy finally decided to go after the barefooted kid. So the next day he got on the bus and waited for the barefooted kid. I won’t give away what happens though, but Roy dose find out that he has a sister, I mean stepsister. She goes to Roy’s School, and her name is Beatrice. Beatrice knows her stepbrother ran away. He ran away that night after her dad got married to his mom. His mom never liked him, she treated him like dirt. So he just was tiered of it and ran away. Beatrice has been covering for him, saying remember you sent him to Boot camp? Her Mom and Dad always believed her. Beatrice is a soccer player, she has red rimmed glasses, she has dirty blonde hair, and she is aggressive, and hates her stepmother.
Well Beatrice’s stepbrother’s real name is Napoleon Bridger Leep, but Beatrice calls him Mullet fingers, because he can catch a mullet with his hands, without using a net. The plot in this story is to save the Burrowing Owls from getting buried. I really liked this story a lot, and I think it was much better then the movie. I would suggest this to anyone who wants to read an action, and mystery book. Roy in the beginning of the book would never face his fears, and stand up for what is right. By the end of the book everyone in coconut cove knew his name, and no one called him cowgirl anymore. This all happened just because he helped save owls, which were protected. He is much more brave, and responsible. I really enjoyed reading this book a lot, and now I might read other books by Carl Hiddesen.
