Tess writes the following about The Secret Life of Amanda K. Woods :
The Secret Life of Amanda K. Woods By Ann Cameron. Have you ever wanted to read something about a character that you can really understand? Well, if you have then you’ve found the right book! This fictional story takes place in the nineteen fifties in the two cities of Lost Lake and Rome, Wisconsin. Lost Lake is a very rural location where it’s easy for Amanda to take care of her horse, Skipper. This is where the Woods family lives. Rome is where Amanda’s dad owns the hotel, The Logger’s Inn. It’s also where Amanda goes to school. She would come to the hotel after school to do homework and have sundaes made by the cook, Charley. The main character throughout this book is Amanda Woods, a shy, adventurous and imaginative eleven year old girl. She has long, dirty blonde hair and sky blue eyes. Amanda thinks of herself as someone who is barely noticed by anyone, from her mother to any girl at school. A day after the devastating event of Amanda’s best friend, Lyle, moving, she hears her mom talking on the phone saying the words, “Amanda is average, but she’s sweet”. After she heard this, Amanda feels like she let her mom down in some sort of way. So now, she’s really trying hard to prove to everyone that she isn’t just average. Her demanding sister, Margaret, her French penpal, Antoine Bonnier, and her brand new friend, Pamela Collins, will help her along the way. The author of this book, Ann Cameron, made this book seem like it could happen to any girl around Amanda’s age. I would recommend this book to girls ages eight and up because they would really be able to relate to Amanda’s life and the problems that occur later on in this book. I would give this book a ten out of ten for being very realistic and because people can really understand how Amanda feels in this book and what she has to face. Will Amanda be able to prove to her mom that she isn’t just an average eleven year old girl? Read the book and find out!!
